Information for schools attending the 2008 Eco Ed Camps

Each school should receive a confirmation letter in August.  The letter will identify how many students you have anticipated for the camp, and will be used to determine how many teams you should organize your students into.  We ask the schools to verify how many students are expected to be attending, as we have lunches catered in and need a head count of both students and adults attending.

Please have your students and teachers wear nametags.  Hanging tags or pin-on tags are preferred.  We find a lot of stick-on nametags lying on the trails and areas students used the last few years.  The tags should be sturdy enough to stay on for the day.  Please have the names and team number on the tags.  Print should be large enough and legible so facilitators can read them easily.

The grant for this camp requires one adult for every six students.  I am able to count your teachers and chaperones hours towards the grant’s matching funds.

It is important that schools Turtle River State Park Woodland Lodge on time. If you know the schedule will not be able to be followed, please let me know in advance so I can amend the schedule.)  The individuals giving presentations need to know time changes, as many are traveling great distances.

Things to review prior to your school's participation:

  1. Has your school made busing arrangements? The Soil Conservation will reimburse you for any busing expenses, but the schools are responsible for scheduling buses.  Send us the bill when you have received it.  Be sure to let us know who to make the check payable to.  If you will not need reimbursement for buses let me know, and we can use that as match towards our grant.

  1. We will be having lunches catered from Good Friends Café in Larimore.  (The camp pays these costs.)  If there are special dietary needs please advise me so we can have alternative foods available for students, chaperones or teachers.  We need to know how many will be attending from your school (students and adults).  If there are significant increases or decreases in numbers let the Soil Conservation District know.  If you have parents that want to attend, we do not turn them away.

  1. Do you have students that have physical limitations (such as wheel chairs) that we need to be aware of?  We have tried to make the sites as handicap accessible as possible, and restrooms are now accessible as well.

  1.  Each person attending should bring a filled water bottle.  It gets hot in the sun and you will need to drink a lot of water.  If you do not have a water bottle, a 20 ounce pop bottle can be refilled with water.  Put your name on your bottle with permanent marker.

  2. Since these are outdoor activities, you will want to use bug spray.  Please give any bug spray to your teacher or chaperone.

  3. Wear shoes you won’t mind getting wet or muddy. It is very likely you will be IN the river or other water during the camp. DO NOT WEAR SANDALS.

  4. Dress for the weather.  Shorts are not recommended, as there is Poison Ivy in the wooded areas.  The sessions continue even in the rain.  If there is a possibility of rain, bring a rain gear.

  5. There are bees and hornets.  We are setting traps in advance to reduce numbers.  If you have allergies to bee stings be sure to bring the appropriate medication and give it to your teacher.

If your school is attending the two day camp and staying overnight:

Bring sleeping bags or bedding, a pillow, insect repellant, flashlight, soap, shampoo, etc...

The old sledding hill by the chalet is off limits.  This area is becoming unstable, and Turtle River State Park has requested that campers stay off.  There is another hill to the east of the chalet that you can climb.

Bring only necessary items.  Leave your money and valuables at home.  Do not bring items that can be damaged or stolen such as CD players or electronic games.

Students and adults staying overnight are responsible for cleaning the cabins they use.  This is not a motel, and maid service is not available.  In the event that there are damages to the cabins, or if someone has to be hired to clean the cabins, the bill will be sent to the individuals / schools using the cabin.  This is a state park, and littering fines are in place.  Please remove any trash or litter (man-made) from around your cabin.

Schools will be responsible to structure the evening hours.
