Education is a priority in our Soil Conservation District.  Check out some of our Youth Education activities

  • Junior Achievement is an international education program that focus' on economics.  We have been participating through classroom presentations for six years.  In the past our Education Coordinator has been giving classroom presentations for fourth grade classrooms in the district.  The unit includes five lessons focusing on economics in regional resources.  Typically she visits four classrooms and starts the visits as Lena.  This year our new Watershed Coordinator will also be working with one classroom of students over a five week period.  This is such a great opportunity to share information about our unique area to our local students.

Lena, the homesteader talks about life on the farm in the 1880s.

  • Arbor Day - For over twenty years the district has served on the Greater Grand Forks Arbor Day Committee.  Through this activity area fourth grade students participate in the annual celebration. In addition to the Arbor Day ceremony, Education Trunks have been distributed to all the elementary schools in the district for use in learning about trees.

Nutsy the Squirrel is the Greater Grand Forks Arbor Day Mascot.

  • "TREES" (The Regional Environmental Education Series) is a state wide education program offered to elementary schools.  Our district sponsors this program to make it available to schools in our district.  Each year Tom Gibson, alias; Sam Ting, Pete Bogg, Darin Ewe, Gunnar, and Pvt. George Gibson, visit our many schools.  The six conservation programs he offers complement classroom instruction in science, social studies and history.  Students learn the importance of our natural resources, and how to be good stewards of our land, water, trees and wildlife.

  • Conservation presentations to schools and other organizations are provided by our Education Coordinator. We participate in numerous activities including Junior Achievement, Water Festivals, summer 4-H programs, and programs at Turtle River State Park.  Topics range from wildlife, trees, water quality, and conservation history.  Schools in our district are asked to contact us if they have activities or presentations we can assist with. One of Nedra Hoberg's alias' names is Lena, a Norwegian immigrant.  Lena is a regular visitor at area Water Festivals.
  • Earth Day at the Grand Forks Air Base has become a regular event for the District.  We give programs for both youth and adults.
